40 days ago I wrote about my new workstation setup with the Mac Pro. I absolutely love this setup from the measly laptop I came from, and my workflow is pretty complete minus my backup system which I’m still drafting out. I have, however, made a major change with the displays. Here’s why. The old Apple Cinema Display 23″ and 20″ setup. If you read in the previous post, I had two Apple Cinema displays setup in landscape and portrait mode for editing work. On the left was my ACD 23″ S-IPS HD Panel and on the right was a 20″ ACD Panel. While this setup was pretty nice, at first, ultimately there were a few problems that crept up. One was the fact that they were not matched panels regarding size. So when running certain fullscreen apps, I either gained, or lost pixels on each screen while working in Lightroom, or other apps. The 1920×1200 is a great resolution on a 23/24″ display, but 1650×1080 on the 20″ is just a bit too small for any real desktop work. The second problem was the brightness. I typically work at about 90-100 cd and the 20″ wasn’t able to compete at that brightness compared to the 23″. So that presented a choice: Purchase a second used 23″ and potentially run into the same power issues I ran into already, plus other inverter board issues, or sell both displays and pick up some new panels. As you can no doubt guess, I decided to sell and purchase two new displays, mostly because the price was right, and there are three year warranties with these displays. I wound up picking up two Dell U2412M IPS panels, and a Spyder 3 Elite color calibrator. The latest workstation setup with two matched Dell 24″ U2412M IPS Panels. The Dell Displays Both displays were new, and come with a 3 year warranty. Dell is also pretty good with their dead/stuck pixel policy, and will allow returns if there are even 1 bad pixel on the display. That’s good news for someone picky, like me. Thankfully though, I had no dead/stuck pixels, and no color gradation issues that some folks report on. Note that these have been receiving better reviews compared to other Dell displays like the U2410 (a better wide gamut display). I won’t get into too many details on the displays themselves, other than to mention that these are E-IPS panels, versus the Apple Displays being S-IPS. The wide gamut Dell U2410 is an H-IPS panel. So what’s the difference? E-IPS panels are relatively new, offer LED power savings alternative compared to CCFL in S-IPS and H-IPS panels, are thinner, lighter, and still offer great IPS performance for color stability at various viewing angles. Brightness remains good over the life of the display compared to CCFL which loses brightness over a period of time. So what makes S-IPS and H-IPS potentially better? Black depth, color range, and overall viewing angle quality. The reality however,...
